What if I am suffering a hardship?
Who do I contact for assistance?
How can Senator Levin's office assist me?
If you still have questions...

What can I do if I'm having problems with the IRS?

If you are experiencing a problem dealing with the IRS or suffering a significant hardship as a result of the administration of tax law, you can contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service for assistance.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service administers the IRS' Problem Resolution Program and is responsible for representing the taxpayers' point-of-view within the service. The Problem Resolution Program provides assistance to taxpayers whose problems are not resolved through normal IRS channels.

If you have a problem which hasn't been resolved in prior contacts with the IRS, you may call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at (313) 628-3670.

What if I am suffering a hardship?

A significant hardship is a situation where an action by the IRS, if taken, would prevent a taxpayer from providing for basic necessities such as housing, food, utilities, and transportation, or for a business taxpayer to meet basic expenses such as payroll.

If you are suffering significant hardship as a result of the administration of tax law, you may file a Form 911, Application for Taxpayer Assistance Order, with the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Taxpayer Assistance Orders allow the Taxpayer Advocate to intervene, review the facts and circumstances of the case, and take the appropriate steps allowed by law to relieve the taxpayer's hardship.
